It's Spring time again and one of my favourite things to do with my class when it is nice outside is to go for a walk and learn from our surroundings. Here on Vancouver Island we have many nice walks we have a park with First Nations hieroglyphics, we have beautiful trails surrounding the river, dam, and ocean. Do some research and take advantage of the beautiful surroundings in your area and allow your students some time in the fresh air to learn about their local environment.
A fun way to get students thinking outdoors is to explore the local plants and trees. You can do an outdoor scavenger hunt or have students observe, document, draw, or if you have access to I Pads or digital cameras take photographs of local plants. Students can then do some research about their plant or tree from books or the computer.
